Tenshinhan (or Tien Shinhan in the English anime dub, but generally just Tien) is a fictional character from the manga Dragon Ball/Dragon Ball Z and the anime series Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z. He is known as Shinto in an early 1980's dub of Dragon Ball.

He is introduced as an enemy of the series' hero, Son Goku, but soon becomes an ally. His most noticeable feature is his third eye. Tien is exceptionally strong for a human, but he is soon outpaced by the more powerful characters in the series.

Biography

Tien started as a student of Template:DB:LDBc (The Crane Hermit Master Shen), the nemesis of Muten-Rshi a.k.a. Kame Sen'nin (Master Roshi). He is usually accompanied by Chaozu (Chiaotzu in the English anime), his training partner and constant companion.

Dragon Ball

Tenshinhan Saga

Tien is first introduced to the series at the 22nd Tenka'ichi Budkai (fighting tournament) during the Tenshinhan Saga. He is a student of Master Shen, who is entering his two top pupils (Tien and Chaozu) to defeat the students of his rival, Master Roshi.

Tien easily wins the preliminary rounds, defeating his opponents so quickly that few can even see how many attacks he lands on them. Between the matches, Tien and Yamcha come close to blows on several occasions. When the finals begin, Tien has Chaozu use his telepathic powers to determine the order of the fights. He picks Yamcha as his first opponent, eager to settle the grudge between them.

Yamcha battle

In his battle with Yamcha, Tien finds his first challenge. The match starts off fairly evenly, with Yamcha seeming to pull ahead slightly after knocking Tien down with his Shin Rougafufuken (New Wolf Fang Fist). Tien then starts to take the fight seriously, and readies himself against the attack, brutally countering when Yamcha tries it again. Weakened by Tien's assault, Yamcha tries his wild card, and fires a Kamehameha at Tien. Tien is able to reflect the attack however, forcing Yamcha to dodge it. In his state of disbelief, Tien is able to get a powerful hit on Yamcha and kick him unconscious. As Yamcha falls to the ground Tien does one final attack, diving down and smashing his knee into Yamcha's leg, breaking it.

Soon after this battle, while watching the match between Kuririn and Chaozu, Tien overhears Goku mention that Chiaotzu's Dodonpa attack is the same as that used by Template:DB:LDBc (Mercenary Tao in the American version). Tien is surprised to learn that Goku knows of the assassin, and even more so when Goku informs him that he killed Tao. Tien is both saddened and angered by this knowledge, as Tao was his role model and the younger brother of the Crane Hermit.

Jackie Chun battle

Tien's next fight is against Muten-Rshi, who is using the alias of Jackie Chun. It is again a fairly even battle, with no fighter at an obvious advantage until Tien uses his Taiy-ken (Solar Flare) technique to temporarily blind Jackie and then land a powerful knee attack to the back of Jackie's neck, nearly knocking him down long enough to win. As the fight progress, Jackie tries to convince Tien to abandon the evil ways of Tsuru-Sen'nin. This, along with some telepathic help from Tsuru-Sen'nin, reveals Jackie's true identity to Tien. In response to this, Tien launches a Kamehameha at Roshi, having learned it from observing Yamcha during the earlier fight. Roshi, worried that it would harm spectators, is able to deflect the blast into the sky. After witnessing this, Roshi compliments Tien and exits out of the ring, forfeiting the match.

After the match is over, Tien is disturbed by why Roshi let him win. He knows that Roshi does not fear him, and that Roshi didn't even fight to his full ability. He soon confronts Roshi, demanding an explanation. Roshi tells him that it's time for a new generation of fighters to take over from the old, and that Tien is part of them. He also states that Tien is not truly evil at heart. Until the start of the final match with Goku, Roshi's words keep going through Tien's mind.

Goku battle

The fight between Tien and Son Goku starts off fast. Tien takes an early advantage, nailing Goku with a Dodonpa, seeing through his Zanzoken technique, hammering him with the Machine Gun Tsuki, then knocking down him with the Haikyuken.

Goku seems little worse for the attacks however, and declares that he will now fight Tien with all his strength. He starts off with a quick series of attacks, nearly finishing with a Kamehameha, but changes his mind at the last second, knowing that Tien would simply deflect it.

The fight continues with a short Zanzoken duel, each fighter using the technique to dodge an attack and try one themselves, with Goku getting the final kick in. Tien then attempts his Taiyoken again, but is floored by Goku, who was wearing shades after learning of the technique from Tien's previous match.

When Goku next moves in to attack, he is frozen in place, allowing Tien to land a punch. This happens several more times, and Tien pummels Goku in the process until he realizes that Chiaotzu is behind it. Tien telepathically tells Chiaotzu to stop interfering in his match, as he wants to beat Goku fairly. This angers Tsuru-Sen'nin, who then orders Tien to kill Goku. Tien defiantly states he won't kill Goku, both because he doesn't want to be disqualified, and that he no longer wants to be an assassin like Tao Pai Pai. The now infuriated Tsuru orders Chiaotzu to kill both Tien and Goku. When Chiaotzu refuses, Tsuru then threatens to kill him instead. Roshi puts an end to this by blasting Tsuru out of the stadium with a Kamahameha, allowing Tien and Goku to concentrate on their match. Tien starts off by allowing Goku to thrash him a bit, evening them up for Chiaotzu's earlier interference.

Tien then attempts one of his "aces-up-sleeve" technique, and uses his Shiyoken ability to grow an extra set of arms. Goku counters by using a psuedo-eight arms technique he learned from an earlier fight in the tournament, which Tien is hard pressed to defend against. Goku then manages to get Tien into a leg-lock submission hold, the pain of which causes Tien to lose his extra arms.

After freeing himself, Tien decides to use his final attack, the Kikoho. He warns Goku to dodge the blast, forcing him out of the arena, as there is no way to survive being hit by it. Tien then floats high in the air and uses the attack, destroying the entire arena. Goku did dodge the blast though, leaping incredibly high in the air. Tien is convinced he'll win at this point, as he can levitate and Goku can't. Goku readies one final Kamehameha and, at the last moment, turns around, using the attack to send him rocketing into Tien. Both fighters fall to the ground, Goku slightly ahead. He tries to use another, smaller Kamehameha wave to slow himself down, but is hit by truck and lands first. Tien lands an instant later, thus winning the tournament.

After the match, Tien offers Goku half of the prize money, as he recognizes that it was mere luck that he won. He also apologizes to Yamcha for using such excessive force during their fight. Roshi offers to let Tien stay at the Kame House, but Tien declines, stating that he can not follow the teachings of another, even if he has betrayed his master.

King Piccolo Saga

The festive mood is short-lived however, as soon Kuririn is found dead at the tournament location after going back to fetch Goku's Nyoi-bo. Along with his body there was note with the character 'Ma' (demon) on it. Roshi tells everyone that it represents an incredibly powerful Demon King, Piccolo, who was sealed away centuries ago by Roshi's old master using the suicidal Template:DB:LDBsa technique, but is now apparently free again.

Realizing the gravity of the situation, Tien volunteers to help in anyway he can. He is informed of the Dragonballs and, along with Chaozu and Roshi, is soon on a quest to retrieve them. The plan is that they will use the power of the dragon to wish for the death of Piccolo, preventing him from wreaking havoc on the world again.

Their quest first takes them to the Arctic, where Tien blasts an icecap to retrieve the first ball. To obtain the second, they infiltrate a pirate ship which has wheels and travels on land. Finding the greedy captain's price for the Dragonball rather unreasonable, they quickly dispatch his henchmen, causing him to change his mind and give it to them freely.

At the third location, they arrive at a near-vacated town. When Tien enters the a house where the Dragonball is indicated to be he finds himself face-to-face with a man who he savagely beat at a tournament several years ago, in a manner similar to his crippling of Yamcha. At first the man's wife calls the police, believing Tien is responsible for the series of murders being committed by Piccolo's henchmen. Roshi is able to prove Tien's innocence however and the police soon leave. Not trusting Tien, the man wearily predicts that Tien will proceed to tear his humble house apart in his search for the object. Instead, Tien grovels at the mans feet, begging him for forgiveness for his previous cruel actions and for the Dragonball which can help stop the current crisis. Surprised by Tien's humbleness, the man grants his forgiveness and gives Tien the Dragonball.

After finding the fourth Dragon Ball in a den of ornery crows, the group then plans how they will get the one already obtained by Piccolo. Tien inquires about the possibility of using the Mafuba, but finds Roshi viciously opposed to the idea. They then attempt to get the fifth Dragonball which is in a rough, rocky region, but temporarily lose it when boulders come lose, finding it again in a forest.

When the dragon radar indicates that the two remaining balls are now together, and heading towards them at speed, they realize that Piccolo is coming for them and Goku is likely dead. They quickly formulate a plan where Tien and Roshi will steal Piccolo's Dragonballs and hand them off to Chaozu, who will then use them to summon the dragon and make the wish to destroy the demon.

It is futile however, as after Piccolo arrives he swallows his two Dragonballs, suspecting a trap. Tien prepares for battle regardless, but is knocked out by Roshi and dragged out of sight into a cave. Semi-conscious, Tien witnesses Roshi's stand against the powerful Demon King, watching as Roshi uses the Mafuba and nearly succeeds at trapping him again, but fails when the containing jar closes slightly too early. Roshi then dies as Piccolo escapes unharmed from the attack and joins the seven balls together to make a wish to restore his youth.

Still unable to move after Roshi's surprise attack, Tien orders Chaozu to quickly make a wish to destroy Piccolo before the Demon King can make one himself. Chaozu tries, but is quickly killed mid-sentence from a blast by Piccolo, an act Tien can only watch. Piccolo continues to make his wish and then destroys the dragon, knowing it's the only thing that can stop him.

After regaining his mobility, and Piccolo has long gone, Tien surveys the dead bodies of Roshi and Chaozu and lets out his anger, shattering a large rock. He then sees the jar that Roshi nearly trapped Piccolo in and thinks about the Mafuba technique. Yamcha, Bulma and a few others arrive, horrified by the deaths. Yamcha tells Tien that they should work together to combat Piccolo, being the only two fighters left. Tien declines this offer, stating that he will take Piccolo alone, as only he will be able to use the Mafuba technique against him. Yamcha pleads to learn the wave from Tien, but again he declines.

In the time that passes, Tien rehearses the move, knowing that he will only get one opportunity to use it. Once he has successfully learned it Tien gets into a capsule jet and races towards Piccolo's location. He talks to Launch over the viewscreen and admits that by sacrificing his life to save the world from Piccolo, he feels that it will redeem him for his prior misdeeds.

Tien soon arrives at East City, which Picolo has taken over, and shouts a challenge to him. Piccolo considers this more of a jest then anything and spawns a new minion, a fat demon he calls Drum, to do battle in his place. Tien battles Drum, but tries to use the minimum energy he can, knowing that he'll need most of it to use the Mafuba on Piccolo. This results in his being beaten by Drum, and Piccolo, bored of the fight starts to leave. Tien seizes his one opportunity and quickly pulls out the containing jar, only to find that it's cracked from the stress all the training he went through put on it.

Piccolo, infuriated by the sight of the jar, blasts Tien, knocking him down and leaving him heavily injured. Piccolo then orders Drum to rip out Tien's heart, only to for Goku to intervene and save Tien, killing Drum with one fierce kick.

Battered by Piccolo's attack, Tien can only watch as Goku and Piccolo battle it out. When Piccolo charges up a massive blast however, he uses the last of his strength to quickly fly in and levitate Goku out of its path, collapsing afterwards.

When the battle seems to be turning against him, Piccolo decides to take Tien hostage, grabbing him by the skull and threatening to crush it if Goku doesn't comply. Tien tells Goku to attack regardless, but instead Goku obeys the demon, allowing himself to be crippled in the process.

Tien is dropped by Piccolo, who moves to finish off Goku, but is instead destroyed when Goku does a final, kamehameha propelled punch, creating a massive hole in the demons chest. Piccolo, knowing he is defeated, concedes defeat and spits out one final egg into the distance before dying.

With the battle over, Tien heads back to the Kame House with Launch, Yamcha and Bulma. He vows to train harder so that next time he and Goku meet at the fighting tournament, it will be a good match.

Piccolo Junior Saga

Tien keeps up his training, redoubling his efforts after learning that Goku is being trained by Kami, Guardian of the Earth. With the dragon restored, a wish is made to bring all those killed by Piccolo back to life. Tien is then trains with Yamcha and the newly resurrected Kuririn and Chaozu until they are informed by Roshi that, to be able to compete with Goku, they are going to need to find better ways to train then are available at the Kame House.

During one such session, carrying large boulders on their backs as they race, Tien is overcome with frustration that he may never become as strong as Goku training himself like this, and the group soon decides to go to Karin's Tower to receive further training from the martial arts master.

Three years pass, and Tien returns to compete in the 23rd Tenka'ichi Budkai. He is somewhat surprised to see the now teenaged Goku and hopeful that he's even more powerful than before. His real shock, however, is seeing Piccolo (who is going by the alias "Ma Junior" (Demon Junior)), and realizing that something of the Demon King has survived. He remains silent about the matter for the time, not wishing to create a panic.

When the lots are drawn up to determine the order of the fights, Tien again has Chaozu manipulate the cards so that none of the group (Tien, Yamcha, Goku, Chaozu and Kuririn) or Piccolo fight each other in the preliminaries.

The early matches seem to be going as usual, with the group quickly dispatching their foes. Tien then receives a horrible vision of something happening to Chaozu. He races to the scene and finds Chaozu heavily wounded and unconscious, his opponent turing out to be the now cybernetic Tao Pai Pai. Tao explains that after his seeming death by Goku, he was rebuilt into the half-man half-machine before them, and that he seeks revenge on both Goku and the "traitor" Tien. Tien gladly accepts his challenge, wanting to avenge Chaozu.

They get their wish as the Tien and Tao are the first of the eight finalists to fight. Tien and Tao attempt to stare each other down, and Tien recalls the brutal training methods that Tao used to teach him. Tao lunges at Tien, but has every move blocked. Tien is reluctant to humiliate is old teacher and demands a mere apology for the savage way that Tao beat Chaozu. Tao refuses this and presses on his assault. In response Tien grabs him from behind in an arm lock and starts slowly walking towards the edge of the ring to disqualify Tao. Tao retaliates by disconnecting the mechanical hand that Tien is gripping, and uses the surprise of the moment to unsheath a knife from the wrist that it was attached to and slash Tien across the chest, leaving him permanently scarred. This illegal move angers Tien, and elevates the fight. When Tao attempts to stab him again, Tien breaks the knife in half. Tao then drops his other hand, revealing a cannon. He boasts that it has the power to fire a super version of the Dodonpa and levels it at Tien. Tien doesn't flinch however, and nullifies the attack with his Ki Akeshi. He then proceeds to pummel Tao, taking him out with a few hits.

Tien drops the unconscious body by Tsuru-sen'nin, who was watching the fight and cheering Tao on for his vengeance. Tien warns them never to interfere in his life again, then retires to fighters hall to be alone.

Tien's next fight is the one he's been waiting for, a rematch against Goku. The battle starts with numerous quick sparrings and shows to be fairly even, but with Tien having an edge in raw speed. This changes after Goku removes his weighted clothing though, making Goku fast enough to steal Tien's belt without Tien even noticing. Realizing that he won't be able to defeat Goku physically, Tien uses a new technique he's created the Shishin No Ken (12 eyes) and splits into four identical copies of himself. Goku at first thinks this is simply an illusion, but quickly changes his mind after being hit by two of them. The Tiens disperse to the four corners of the ring, each one then firing a ki blast at the center, where Goku is, resulting in a large explosion. When no sign of Goku can be seen after, they quickly scan around and locate him in the clouds. Again they fire energy beams, this time from their third eyes, at Goku, sending him crashing back to the ring. The Tiens warn Goku to give up before he gets hurt, but he appears unphased by their attacks, and states they won't be able to pull off that trick again, which they then promptly attempt. Goku dodges the beams this time though, and uses the Taiy-ken against them, blinding the Tiens. He then quickly dispatches each of them, causing them to revert back to the single Tien. Goku states that the new technique Tien has a critical weakness, as Tien's power is divided amongst the duplicates. With the fight over, Tien looks forward to their next rematch, suspecting that Goku was still holding quite a bit back.

Tien plays little role in following battles, Tien can only watch as Goku fights the seemingly all-powerful Piccolo. He offers his assistance at several points, but is denied by Goku who wants to fight the demon alone, though he does open the Denshi Jar, which Piccolo used to trap Kami, after Goku tosses it to him. Tien also helps to evacuate their friends, creating a pit in the earth for them take shelter from one Piccolo's more devastating attacks.

When it looks like Goku has been beaten, with Piccolo close to finishing him off, Tien reluctantly accepts the order from Kami to kill the elderly guardian, thus also killing Piccolo. He stopped by Goku though, who evades the demon's onslaught and ends up defeating him with a surprise attack.

Dragon Ball Z

Sayian Saga

Five years after the tournament, Tien learns that Goku has died in battle against an amazingly powerful warrior called Raditz, a Saiyan and Goku's brother. Even more disturbing is that two more Saiyan's, both more powerful than Raditz, are on their way to Earth and will be there in about a year.

Tien wastes no time, and is invited, along with Yamcha, Chaozu, Yajirobe and Kuririn, to train at Kami's Lookout so they can aid Goku when he is wished back to life in a year, after he completes his training with King Kai.

When the Saiyan's finally do arrive, the Z Fighters have to hold them off until Goku can arrive. Vegeta, deciding to toy with his opponents, has Template:DB:LDBc grow several Template:DB:LDBc in the Earth's soil so he can hold a small tournament.

Knowing that they have to buy time, the Z Fighters agree to this, and Tien volunteers to go first. He manages to quickly defeat the vicious creature, causing Vegeta to destroy it for incompetence.

After all the Saibamen are destroyed, Nappa decides to enter the fray himself, taking on Tien as his first opponent. Tien is no match for the giant warrior, and has his arm ripped off early in the fight. Seeing this, Chaozu sacrifices himself with his own kamikaze attack against Nappa, who remains unharmed and starts to fight Piccolo and Gohan.

Tien, enraged by the death of Chaozu, puts all his remaining strength into one final Kikoho attack, killing himself in the process. The attack manages to do serious damage to Nappa's armor, but does not hurt the Sayian himself.

Freeza Saga

Because of the influence of Kami, when Tien and the others perished they were allowed train on King Kai's planet, similar to Goku.

He remains there, in intense training, until he is wished back to Earth at the end of the saga with Porunga's third batch of wishes.

Cell Saga

After returning to Earth, Tien and Chaozu go into solitude, training in the mountains. They are interrupted when they sense a great evil. Flying to the location where it's coming from, Tien finds Vegeta.

Tien prepares to battle the Saiyan until Yamcha fills him in that Vegeta is, somewhat, on their side now. In a short time, all the Z Fighters, sans Goku, prepare for the coming of what they now realize is Freeza, who somehow survived.

When Freeza does land though, he is quickly dispatched by the mysterious youth (Trunks). Piccolo, overhearing the youths private conversation with Goku, tells them the warning that incredibly powerful Androids will attack in three years. Tien then redoubles his training.

The three years soon pass and the Z Fighters head to the location where the androids soon appear. Tien himself doesn't do any fighting until Android 16, 17, and 18 appear. He attacks 17, but is way overmatched, and ends up being choked until he is dropped.

When the androids leave the continue their pursuit of Goku, Tien goes off with Chaozu to try and get powerful enough to help against this new threat. He is interrupted by the entry of Cell however, and lends his aid to help hunt for the new menace.

Eventually Tien catches up with Cell, and witnesses his battle against the combined force of Piccolo and 17. Cell defeats Piccolo though, and ends up absorbing 17 to become "Semi-Perfect" Cell. Cell then makes his move to absorb 18 as well, but is held off by Tien, who uses his Kikoho to hold Cell in place until Goku arrives and relieves the thoroughly drained Tien.

When Cell declares his Cell Games Tien sits on the sidelines, awaiting his turn to enter the arena against the monstrosity. It isn't to be though, as Cell spawns seven Template:DB:LDBcs to torment the Z Fighters in order to make Gohan angry. Tien tries to protect an exhausted Goku from the wrath of the frenzied, child-like monster, but is again outmatched. After a through beating, he is saved by Gohan, who then goes on to destroy Cell.

Buu Saga

In the Buu Saga, Tien appears only briefly. He saves Hercule (Mr. Satan in the original Japanese anime and manga) and Dende from being killed by Buu, but is dispatched after one hit.

Dragon Ball GT

In Dragon Ball GT, Tenshinhan didn't do that much, he only appeared in two episodes, and some flashbacks.

Special abilities

Third eye
Tien's third eye has numerous capabilities.

  • Enhanced sight: Tien has significantly better vision then normal. This does, however, make him weak against the Taiy-ken technique.
  • Kousengan: A thin laser-like energy beam shot from Tien's third eye. It can stun his opponents.
  • Copy Attack: Tien can observe and learn the attacks of his opponents. During the 22nd Tenka'ichi Budkai, he used this ability to mimic Yamcha's Kamehameha in his battle against Jackie Chun. He also uses it later to learn the Mafuba technique after watching Roshi perform it.

Dodonpa
An energy beam shot from the finger, it's comparable to the basic Kamahameha.

Ki Akeshi
Tien can nullify ki blasts within a close proximity, provided that they are not too powerful for him. It is sometimes also called Kiai.

Ki-K-H
Tien makes a closed triangle with his hands (the tips of his fingers and thumbs touching). He then looks through the opening at his opponent and unleashes a blast. This is Tien's most powerful attack, but it drains his lifeforce and is potentially fatal if overused. Tien later upgrades this to the Shin-Ki-K-H.

Template:DB:LDBsa
Tien is able to split himself into 4 separate identical bodies. Each of these bodies only has 1/4 of the power of the original though. It is quite useful for attacking the opponent at multiple angles though. It usually goes by the name 12 eyes.

Shiyoken
Tien can sprout 2 extra arms from behind his shoulders, increasing his combat effectiveness. Tien only uses this move once against Goku during the 22nd fighting tournament.

Taiy-ken
Tien is able to create an extremely bright light, enough to temporarily blind and stun most opponents. It is used by several Z Fighters, though he was the originator.

Zanzoken
The user of this technique is able to move extremely fast over small distances, leaving an after-image behind. It can be considered a very short-range teleportation.

Fighting techniques

Machine Gun Tsuki
A very rapid series of punches on his opponents weak spots.

Haikyuken
Also known as the Volleyball technique, Tien hits his opponent in the air, 'bumps' them back up when they come down, then 'spikes' them to the ground.

Rapid Velocity Technique
Tien moves his arms faster than can be seen, creating a vacuum which sucks his opponent in and then pummels them.

Differences in the anime from the manga

  • Tien and Chaozu are introduced slightly earlier at the end of the Fortunteller Baba Saga. Here, they are con-artists who utilize a wild boar-like creature, Inoshikacho, to destroy towns. They then show up at the place and offer their services to "kill" the creature. Goku learns of this scheme and puts an end to it.
  • While fighting against Drum, Tien puts up a better fight against the demon. When Piccolo starts to leave, Tien attempts to use the Mafuba on him, but ends up ensnaring Drum instead. Piccolo then blasts Tien before the Mafuba finishes, allowing Drum to remain free.
  • On his way to train with Karin, Tien, Yamcha, Kuririn and Chaozu rescue a village from an active volcano.
  • While training with Kami, Tien and the others enter the Pendulum Room, which allows them to virtually battle Saiyans from the past.
  • In the Freeza Saga, while training with King Kai, the recently killed members of the Ginyu Force attack Kai's planet, battling against Tien, Yamcha, Chaozu and Piccolo.
  • In the Cell Games, after Cell returns as Ultra Perfect Cell, Tien, along with the other Z Fighters, blast Cell in the back to try and help Gohan.
